Confessions of a Breakfast Addict

An Ode to Breakfast

.

Breakfast foods are, without a shadow of a doubt, far superior in deliciousness to any other time-typified meal out there. Syrup drenched French toast, berry-filled pancakes, everything-but-the-kitchen-sink omelettes, creamy Bircher muesli, refined eggs Benedict, sumptuous smoked salmon and cream cheese bagels, the gut-busting Full English…

.

Whether you fancy something sweet, savoury, hot or cold, there’s a mouthwatering breakfast option just crying out to be eaten.

.

For this reason, I prefer not to limit typical breakfast cuisine to my first meal of the day. This would be nothing if not completely nonsensical. I say, why leave the yummiest meal of the day to breakfast, when you can follow it with brunch, brinner, and a myriad of breakfast themed snacks in between?

.

Here are a couple of breakfast-esque lunches that I’ve enjoyed recently…

.

Brioche French Toast with Bacon, Grilled Banana & Maple Syrup

Blueberry Hotcakes, with Caramelised Banana, Bacon, Lemon Curd Mascarpone & Maple Syrup

As you can see, I am largely a fan of the Sweet Breakfast, although occasionally, something savoury might tickle my fancy. Indeed, I’m rather partial to scrambled eggs and smoked salmon on hot buttered toast. And I have been known to enjoy a fry-up, of a Sunday brunch time.

.

And my breakfast food obsession extends to the far more basic options out there. I am a serial cereal fiend, and have a terrible habit of picking at opened boxes of muesli and the like. I enjoy my cereal dry and crunchy, and have never understood why anyone would want to take something so perfectly delicious and bastardise it with milk. I don’t like my Crunchy Nut Cornflakes soggy, thank you very much.

.

I love oatmeal. It is a wonderful base for all sorts of delectable experimentation. Peanut butter, banana, chocolate, berries… These are just a few of the things that can transform a bowl of gruel into warm, flavoursome Heaven. It’s the ultimate in comfort food, and the perfect remedy to a wintery day.

.

Greek yoghurt is another extremely versatile option, that lends itself perfectly to a multitude of delicious additions. Raw oats and honey, cocoa and almond butter… The options are limitless.

.

If I ruled the world (when I rule the world?), I shall insist upon every food establishment offering an all day breakfast menu. None of this “we stop serving breakfast after 11am” nonsense. I want to see brunch in every cafe and brinner in every restaurant.

.

Surely there are others out there who share my breakfast passion? What is your breakfast obsession? Are you a mornings-only breakfast eater, or is every meal a breakfast meal?

.

I’m off for a peanut butter and banana omelette. Happy breakfasting.

I’m a total sweet breakfast person! I can’t remember the last time I ever had savory.. give me the sweet! :)

    1. Charli says:

A girl after my own heart :)

  2. Eden says:

I’d love the recipe for that brioche french toast! i like sweet and savory, like eggs and turkey bacon with maple syrup!

    1. Charli says:

Alas, I ordered it at a cafe! I’d guess the only difference to normal French toast is that when using Briocke, you’d want more egg mixture to dip it in, as it’s very absorbant. Oh and I quite agree- maple syrup goes wonderfully with savoury things :)

  3. Ellen says:

I get excited to go to bed, simply so that I can wake up and make breakfast! And is it weird that I revolve my breakfast around peanut butter?! Oatmeal, waffles, oat pancakes, yogurt, French toast…you name it!

    1. Charli says:

I go to bed craving breakfast too! And if you’re wierd about peanut butter, than I’m wierd too :p

  4. Aimee says:

I’m a multiple courses breakfast kind of girl. Fruit and coffee, followed by fish or eggs with quark and pesto on toast. This summer I also realised how pancakes, syrup and bacon is so popular in america- it’s delicious! If so so bad for me.
I guess I have a sweet and a savoury part to my bigger breakfasts.
And at work there’s “porridge o’clock” at eleven… I do love breakfast, I never understand how people just eat a little bowl of cereal in the morning. I’m starving and I want some real food when I wake up!

    1. Charli says:

Multiple courses breakfast is definitely the way to go! And America certainly knows how to design a good breakfast- that’s why it’s so great in NZ, they take all the American ideas for their menus.

I think some brioche and banana experimentation sounds like an excellent idea!

  5. Aimee says:

You know I think may have to pick up some brioche at Lidl and work out how to grill a banana…

  6. ben thompson says:

I have stupidly just read this article in bed and am now starving!!…only 7 hours to wait :(

    1. Charli says:

Sorry about that, mate. Was it worth the wait?

  7. Kat says:

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day hands down. I love having pancakes or oats. The way they warm and fill my belly is like nothing else!! I hate having cereal for breakfast, it just doesnt cut it. Breakfast to me is something that usually involves warm melty peanut butter!!

    1. Charli says:

Mmm… warm, melty peanut butter. You’re a woman that talks my language ;)

  8. Riley says:

Breakfast is my all-time favorite meal. When I am keeping it healthy I love a warm bowl of steel cut oats with flax seed, walnuts, blackberries and a dollop of greek yogurt. When I am going all out, I just want a fluffy buttermilk pancake chalked full of melty rich chocolate chips, resting under a bed of fresh slices of banana, and absolutely covered in syrup.
Ever had a bacon pancake? Highly recommended.

    1. Charli says:

Mmm, both of those sound delicious! I’ve had bacon with pancakes, but not a bacon pancake as such…

  9. Tango says:

I love breakfast too. Oh so easy to cook generally. And cheap. I make protein powder pancakes that are starch-free with sugar free syrup. MMM. Also turkey bacon wrap with egg beaters into a Weight Watchers flat bread to roll up with hot sauce. And a skinny latte.

  10. Susan says:

Totally agree about not limiting breakfast foods to just breakfast (especially since I’m not a breakfast eater). Yum…got me thinking about omelettes and hashbrowns. Pics look delicious!

  11. Yolanda says:

Love this! I’m totally breakfast obsessed myself. There nothing like it to start the day. :) )

  12. Monique says:

I love my breakfast no matter what time I get up the day must start with breakfast food!

  13. Bob V. says:

I am a huge fan of Waffles. With a waffle machine my waffles turn out perfect every time and it is a Belgian waffle maker. Though I enjoy pancakes and french toast, for me breaking out that waffle machine and splashing a little powdered sugar and maple syrup is a fantastic meal.
